What it is

Concussion symptoms usually fade in weeks. But for some people — including many veterans and athletes — headaches, brain fog, memory trouble, sleep problems, and mood changes persist for months or years. That's persistent post-concussive syndrome, and standard medicine offers it frustratingly little.

How hyperbaric oxygen helps — what we actually know

The theory: injured brain regions show reduced blood flow and metabolism long after injury, and repeated oxygen-under-pressure exposure may stimulate vascular repair and neuroplasticity in those regions. The evidence: multiple randomized trials report symptom and cognitive improvements; skeptics note some trials showed sham-pressure groups improving too. Newer imaging-based studies strengthen the biological case. Our grade: B — genuinely promising, not yet settled.

What treatment looks like

Research protocols typically use 40 sessions at 1.5–2.0 ATA, 60 minutes each. This is an off-label use: insurance won't cover it, and we quote the full cost before you commit.

Common questions

Why doesn't insurance cover this if trials show benefit?

Because the evidence, while promising, hasn't yet met the bar payers require — partly due to debate over control groups in the trials. That's the honest state of the science, and it's why this is self-pay today.

How long after my injury can I try this?

Trials have enrolled people months to years post-injury, with improvements reported even in chronic cases. Time since injury doesn't appear to close the door.
