The single most effective step in mold-related illness is getting out of the contaminated environment. No therapy, hyperbaric or otherwise, substitutes for removing the exposure.
Where the evidence stands
There are no randomised trials, and no controlled clinical studies, of hyperbaric oxygen for mold exposure, mycotoxin illness, or Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS). The argument put forward for it is mechanistic — claims about inflammation and mitochondrial function — rather than evidence that patients get better. We grade that D, and we would rather say so than sell it.
An important distinction
Hyperbaric oxygen does have a recognised adjunctive role in certain invasive fungal infections, such as rhinocerebral mucormycosis in immunocompromised or diabetic patients. That is a severe, tissue-invasive infection managed in hospital alongside antifungals and surgery. It is medically unrelated to inhalational mold exposure in a damp building, and evidence for the former is not evidence for the latter. The two are frequently and unhelpfully conflated online.
What we suggest instead
Remediation or relocation first, then assessment by a physician familiar with environmental exposures. If you have already done both and are still unwell, we are happy to talk — but we will not present hyperbaric oxygen to you as a treatment for mold illness, because the evidence to do that does not exist.
